I know we all live very busy and stressful lives, and at the end of the day, we just want to crawl into bed and go to sleep. However, even missing one night of not washing your makeup off can cause damage to your skin. From clogging pores to drying out your skin, there are many issues you can easily avoid by taking the few extra minutes each night to properly wash your skin. Let’s take a look at the importance of washing your makeup off each night and how to get into the habit.
Why Should We Remove Makeup Before Bed?
Neglecting your skin by going to bed with your makeup on can clog pores, cause breakouts, prevent the skin from “breathing,” and inhibit the skin’s natural process of repair and regeneration while you sleep. Sleeping in your makeup creates a barrier over the skin that traps in oil, dirt, bacteria, and other irritants. It also prevents moisturize from reaching the layers of your skin while causing fine lines and wrinkles. And who wants that?!
By the end of the day your skin has become layered with sebum, dirt, and makeup, while also enduring exposure to free radicals. That’s why it’s so important to follow a daily skin regimen that’s right for your skin type, including washing your face thoroughly before bedtime. Don’t worry – it doesn’t have to be a super long ritual, but you’ll want to follow one that will be sure to remove all the makeup and buildup that’s seeped into your pores throughout the day.
The upside is that missing your usual skin care routine for one night isn’t going to cause irreparable damage. But continuously sleeping in your makeup can lead to long-term skin damage that can be avoided with proper care.
Are Makeup Wipes Good for Your Face?
The number one misconception out there is that makeup wipes are just as good as washing your face! Sorry to burst your bubble, but sadly, this is very untrue. I know, I know…they’re so easy and when you’ve had a long day or night on the town and the bed is calling out to you, a makeup wipe seems like a suitable and easy fix. WRONG! Not only will they not entirely remove your makeup but wipes tend to smear bacteria, dirt, and makeup all over your face rather than cleaning it thoroughly.
Another issue cleansing wipes pose are that they are water soluble and have a high water content. Most makeup products are oil soluble, meaning they can only be dissolved with oil. This means you’ll have to do a lot of scrubbing with your little wipes to really get a that makeup and buildup off. Plus, the harsh friction and irritation it will demand can harm your delicate skin. Trust me…it’s easier (and safer) to take the extra 5 minutes and cleanse your face the right way.
I Don’t Wear Makeup. Do I Have to Wash my Face Before Bed?
ABSOLUTELY! Even if you don’t wear makeup, your skin is still exposed to plenty of oils and air pollutants that can cause build up on the skin throughout the course of a day. Dirt and oils can clog the pores and can lead to breakouts – even after only one night, so cleansing your skin before bed is crucial.
However, I don’t suggest waiting until the last second. Try to create a nighttime skin care routine that allows you to start earlier in the evening rather than right before you snuggle up with your pillow and blankets. There are two benefits to doing this:
The first is that you’ll be less likely to rush through your face washing or find an excuse to be lazy and skip it altogether due to fatigue.
The second has to do with the skin’s circadian rhythm. It’s been a long-standing belief that the skin’s repair processes kicks in during sleep, but it’s now believed that the repair process kicks in when the day turns from light to dark. We’ll get into this more at a later time, but trust me when I say your skin’s health will greatly benefit from a regular and earlier cleansing routine!
So, where did we land on just missing one night of not washing our face? It’s ok, right? Uh, no! Rememeber….one night is still bad for the health of your skin and preventing dry, dull skin, acne and premature aging is the goal to keep you looking and feeling fabulous! Your best plan of action is to take a few minutes and clean your skin properly. You’ll end up thanking yourself in the future!
